This is the Upskill From Within Playbook, a short, practical guide to help you grow one employee’s skills without blowing your entire L&D budget. It includes five ready-to-go development plays (and we’re using the term “plays” very loosely here, we’re not sportz people). Each one outlines a specific skill focus, tools, timelines, cost, and ROI estimates, so you’re not left staring at a blank doc wondering where to start.
To bring the whole concept to life, we introduce you to a fictional employee named John Hammond (not that one). His persona serves as the test pilot for each play, so you can see how these plans might work for someone on your own team.
Yes, we know you can upskill someone for $800. Technically, you can also survive on string cheese and candy. These $5K(ish) plays land somewhere between “bare bones” and “full-blown MBA,” with just enough muscle to matter.

In this enchanted land, every idea was greeted with enthusiasm, every learning program a triumph, and every module a masterpiece. In the heart of the kingdom stood the Great Learning Tree, its branches stretching high into the starlit sky, offering shade and inspiration to all who sought its wisdom. Underneath its leafy canopy, L&D enthusiasts gathered, sharing tales of successes and challenges, laughing uproariously at the memory of outdated training methods and the once-dreaded buzzword: synergy. No one says synergy here.
In this world, imagination knew no bounds. Training programs were as diverse as the colors of the rainbow, with workshops on everything from dragon taming to unicorn grooming. And oh, the technology! Virtual reality simulations whisked learners away to far-off lands while AI-powered mentors guided them on their educational quests.
Plus, there was plenty of high-end candy to go around. All for free. The only thing missing from this fairy tale land was stress. In the kingdom of L&D, deadlines were but gentle nudges, and budget constraints mere whispers in the wind. Here, mistakes were celebrated as opportunities for growth, and setbacks were viewed as stepping stones to success.
One day, a terrible darkness settled over the kingdom. Rumors swirled that it had carried over from the nearby Realm of ROI. But just when it seemed that all hope was lost, a brave knight named IDLance emerged from the shadows. Clad in kind of dirty armor to be honest, and armed with a heart full of determination, IDLance vowed to fight for the honor and dignity of L&D professionals everywhere. With each swing of the sword, budget cuts were thwarted, and with each step forward, resources were replenished.
Under the guidance of IDLance, the kingdom of L&D rallied together, united in their quest to overcome adversity and reclaim their rightful place in the realm of learning and development.
